Outside of this community, a megabyte usually refers to a unit used to refer to storage or memory on computers.

In the modding scene however, MegaByte often has a different meaning.
MegaByte is the internal name used to refer to the internal workings of the physical hub.
Sometimes the name Bitty is also used (editor's note: I'm not 100% sure of this, but User:Lako used the name in FunkeySelectorGUI and OpenFK).

Internal Workings
The internal workings consist of an unsigned driver and an accompanying
MegaByte.exe
file.
These are both located in the
U.B. Funkeys\MegaByte
folder.

When starting the game, the U.B. Funkeys game executable (UBFunkeys.exe or OpenFK v3 or higher) starts MegaByte.exe and they then communicate through window messages.
(editor's note: check the source code of OpenFunk and the discord messages of the cool modder who found this, this part is probably not that accurate).

MegaByte.exe reads from the hub through an unsigned driver, which makes use of an old version of a driver toolkit known as WinDriver (the used version is now known to be full of exploits).
Because it is unsigned, you need to jump through a bunch of hoops to install it (see the guide for instructions).
It's also not that unlikely that this old, outdated, unsigned, exploitable driver could cause issues with various kernel-level anti-cheat programs (which are also massive security risks themselves), but there have been no reports so far.

Replacements
There are a couple of ways to substitute the functionality that is normally provided by MegaByte.exe:
* Not using the hub and using FunkeySelectorGUI instead. It can even pose as MegaByte.exe and communicate with the game executable in the same way. This means that you can even replace MegaByte.exe with FSGUI on Windows XP, and it will work.
* Using the modified version of Bawoosette's rust driver code that writes to a customF.txt file (requires funkeys selection mod or OpenFK). Currently there are however no builds available and it has only been tested on linux. It also requires root permissions to run unless you figure out the correct udev rules to give it the right permissions.
* FunkeyOne's MegaByte replacement, which is known to work on modern windows and possibly doesn't need the original unsigned driver. It is however closed-source and that means nobody can study or improve it, let alone the malware risk.

FunkeySelectorGUI is a user-friendly program created by User:Lako to change funkeys in-game through the use of other mods.

It is now maintained by User:NanderTGA(U.K. Funkeys) as a fork on the OpenFunk organization on Codeberg, where it is publicly developed and accepting contributions.

The original project was archived along with OpenFK on January 4th, 2026 by User:Lako because he retired from the modding scene.
As such, no further updates can be released unless users manually update to a fork, like the OpenFunk one.

Workings
FunkeySelectorGUI changes the funkey in the game through the use of other mods, usually through OpenFK's customF.txt implementation.

customF.txt
The most commonly used method is writing to the
customF.txt
file, located in the
RadicaGame
directory.
To change funkeys, write to the file in this format:
funkeyCodeNum=00000034
(you need to replace
00000034
with the ID of the funkey you want to change to).

This was first implemented by the Funkeys Selection mod, which is a
Main.swf
modification, that replaces an older method of changing funkeys by modifying a value in memory using Cheat Engine.
To check
customF.txt
, the mod uses the
LoadVars
API in flash, therefore working without relying on the game executable.
It however requires the user to click the close button on the game window to trigger a funkey change.
(This could probably be improved by using setInterval() instead to periodically check for changes.)
FunkeySelectorGUI automatically clicks close for you when it detects the Funkeys Selection mod, so the user only has to click No on the popup that asks them whether they want to quit the game.

Nowadays it is not really used anymore as it has been superseded by OpenFK, which implements the same behavior without a
Main.swf
mod and doesn't require pressing close to trigger a funkey change. OpenFK however does not support Windows XP.

Posing as MegaByte.exe
FunkeySelectorGUI (as of v3.1.0) can also pose as MegaByte.exe by communicating with the game executable in the same way as the original MegaByte.exe does. A user can take advantage of this by either having OpenFK (v3+) launch it, or by fooling the original game executable into launching it by replacing MegaByte.exe with a copy of FunkeySelectorGUI. The latter method works on Windows XP too.

Running on Windows XP
FunkeySelectorGUI can be nice to have for users, but it has multiple requirements:
* Windows XP Service Pack 3 or higher (update through Legacy Update; required by .NET Framework v4.0)
* Windows Imaging Component (download and run the installer (installer links: 64-bit version 32-bit version); required by .NET Framework v4.0)
* .NET Framework v4.0 (download and run the installer)
OpenFK is an open source replacement for the U.B. Funkeys executable. It was developed by Lako and was released on October 18, 2020. It aims to replicate the original executable as much as possible.

OpenFK was archived on January 4th, 2026, as part of User:Lako's retirement.
As a result of this archival, User:NanderTGA(U.K. Funkeys) spinned off his contributions into a separate project called OpenFunk.

This table contains the features that the original executable has, and if OpenFK 1.3 supports it.

OpenFK v3
OpenFK's latest release has been version 2.0 for a long time, as it has been proven to be reliable for most people, and as v3.0 hasn't reached a similar bug-free status yet.
All the development work that has happened since the v2.0 release is nicknamed v3.0, as this is the version number that will show up in the settings screen on any builds of this work.

Over time, a lot of builds of this in-progress work have been given out to users, referred to as nightly builds.
These mostly originate from NanderTGA's old OpenFK fork and more recently from OpenFunk's nightly releases. They are built using GitHub Actions, even though the service has broken the build pipeline multiple times.
The OpenFunk nightly releases also do not expire anymore, contrary to the previous setup.

All the work on v3.0 has been spinned off into OpenFunk. It is still not ready for release.

Improvements
* A more reliable Flash.OCX fetcher, that doesn't rely on powershell (It's still not perfect though, as it doesn't specify the exact expand.exe file to use (which has caused conflicts for some people before), and expand.exe is not included in wine so other methods need to be looked into. The wine issue is not that bad though as this version of Flash.OCX doesn't seem to work with wine anyway.)
* A fully refactored codebase
* Actually shows what errors caused a crash instead of the very confusing error box that gives a possible cause without any checks
* Tries to check if you're using the right version of Flash.ocx (32-bit or 64-bit). In OpenFunk it is intended to download both versions to avoid further headaches.
* Updates ancient versions of FunkeySelectorGUI to the newest version
* Can communicate with MegaByte.exe in the intended way

Regressions
* The update mechanism is broken and will always claim there is an update available
As such, no further updates can be released unless users manually update to a fork, like the OpenFunk one.

Workings
FunkeySelectorGUI changes the funkey in the game through the use of other mods, usually through OpenFK's customF.txt implementation.

customF.txt
The most commonly used method is writing to the
customF.txt
file, located in the
RadicaGame
directory.
To change funkeys, write to the file in this format:
funkeyCodeNum=00000034

This guide will show you how to install FunkeySelectorGUI on Windows XP as a replacement for using the hub.

Installing .NET Framework v4.0
Firstly, we have to install .NET Framework 4.0, as this is required for FunkeySelectorGUI to run:
* First of all, you need windows XP SP3 or higher. If you have an older version of Windows XP, you'll need to update your system. To update your system, go to http://legacyupdate.net (this website works in internet explorer on windows xp) and click on
Install Legacy Update
.

NanderTGA(U.K. Funkeys): add page on FunkeySelectorGUI

Workings
FunkeySelectorGUI changes the funkey in the game through the use of other mods, usually through OpenFK's customF.txt implementation.

customF.txt
The most commonly used method is writing to the
customF.txt
file, located in the
RadicaGame
directory.
To change funkeys, write to the file in this format:
funkeyCodeNum=00000034

NanderTGA(U.K. Funkeys): add page on MegaByte and its workings

The internal workings consist of an unsigned driver and an accompanying `MegaByte.exe` file.
These are both located in the `U.B. Funkeys\MegaByte` folder.

* A fully refactored codebase

* A fully refactored codebase

Regressions
* The update mechanism is broken and will always claim there is an update available

3: type the code 65520 into the text box and hit first scan

4: choose the second option

5: if it isn't added to the box at the bottom add it there yourself and click the box underneath active
