This guide will show you how to install [[FunkeySelectorGUI]] on Windows XP as a replacement for using the hub.

== Installing .NET Framework v4.0 ==
Firstly, we have to install .NET Framework 4.0, as this is required for FunkeySelectorGUI to run:
* First of all, you need windows XP SP3 or higher. If you have an older version of Windows XP, you'll need to update your system. To update your system, go to http://legacyupdate.net (this website works in internet explorer on windows xp) and click on <code>Install Legacy Update</code>. Open the file it downloads and make sure that you select <code>Windows XP Service Pack 3</code>. Then continue on with the process and wait until it finishes. You'll need to restart your computer. After you've done this, you'll also be able to open up Legacy Update from the start menu to install more updates. Feel free to do this, but it's not required. Also, consider leaving them a donation to cover the hosting costs.
* Download and install the Windows Imaging Component. Now onto installing the game:

* Extract its contents in any place you like. You should end up with a folder named <code>U.B. Funkeys</code> that contains a <code>RadicaGame</code> and a <code>MegaByte</code> folder.
* Go into the <code>MegaByte</code>folder and rename the file called <code>MegaByte.exe</code> to <code>MegaByte.original.exe</code>
* Download [https://codeberg.org/OpenFunk/FunkeySelectorGUI/releases/download/latest/FunkeySelectorGUI.exe FunkeySelectorGUI.exe] and rename it to <code>MegaByte.exe</code>
* Put this new <code>MegaByte.exe</code> file in the <code>MegaByte</code> folder.

* Now we should be done. Go to the <code>U.B. Funkeys</code> folder again and go into the <code>RadicaGame</code> folder. Right click on <code>UBFunkeys.exe</code> and click on <code>Send To</code> > <code>Desktop (create shortcut)</code>. This will add a shortcut to the desktop.
* Double click the shortcut. It should launch the game and open up FunkeySelectorGUI along with it!

FunkeySelectorGUI changes the funkey in the game through the use of other mods, usually through OpenFK's customF.txt implementation.

The most commonly used method is writing to the <code>customF.txt</code> file, located in the <code>RadicaGame</code> directory.
To change funkeys, write to the file in this format: <code>funkeyCodeNum=00000034</code> (you need to replace <code>00000034</code> with the ID of the funkey you want to change to).

This was first implemented by the Funkeys Selection mod, which is a <code>Main.swf</code> modification, that replaces an older method of changing funkeys by modifying a value in memory using [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheat_Engine Cheat Engine].
To check <code>customF.txt</code>, the mod uses the <code>LoadVars</code> API in flash, therefore working without relying on the game executable.
It however requires the user to click the close button on the game window to trigger a funkey change.
(This could probably be improved by using setInterval() instead to periodically check for changes.)
FunkeySelectorGUI automatically clicks close for you when it detects the Funkeys Selection mod, so the user only has to click No on the popup that asks them whether they want to quit the game.

Nowadays it is not really used anymore as it has been superseded by OpenFK, which implements the same behavior without a <code>Main.swf</code> mod and doesn't require pressing close to trigger a funkey change. OpenFK however does not support Windows XP.

In the modding scene however, '''MegaByte''' often has a different meaning.
MegaByte is the internal name used to refer to the internal workings of the physical hub.
Sometimes the name Bitty is also used (editor's note: I'm not 100% sure of this, but [[User:Lako]] used the name in [[FunkeySelectorGUI]] and [[OpenFK]]).

The internal workings consist of an unsigned driver and an accompanying `MegaByte.exe` file.
These are both located in the `U.B. Funkeys\MegaByte` folder.

When starting the game, the U.B. Funkeys game executable (UBFunkeys.exe or [[OpenFK#OpenFK v3|OpenFK v3]] or higher) starts MegaByte.exe and they then communicate through window messages.
(editor's note: check the source code of OpenFunk and the discord messages of the cool modder who found this, this part is probably not that accurate).

MegaByte.exe reads from the hub through an unsigned driver, which makes use of an old version of a driver toolkit known as WinDriver (the used version is now known to be full of exploits).
Because it is unsigned, you need to jump through a bunch of hoops to install it (see the guide for instructions).
It's also not that unlikely that this old, outdated, unsigned, exploitable driver could cause issues with various kernel-level anti-cheat programs (which are also massive security risks themselves), but there have been no reports so far.

I'm a somewhat active belgian funkey technician, currently studying Computer Science.

I've contributed a bunch to FSGUI and OpenFK, I pretty much know those codebases by heart.
