Terrapinia is the world in which U.B. Funkeys takes place.

Geography

Terrapinia is a planet very similar in size and nature to Earth. It is made up of a variety of landmasses that are surrounded by clean blue oceans, though the proportion of land to water seems to be much less water-heavy than Earth, as most of its visible surface is made up of continents instead of expansive oceans.

It is not known where in space Terrapinia resides. Considering the planet has a sun, which lights its surface, it is possible that it exists in a solar system; however, the game has no day-night cycle, and there is only a single still image of the planet itself, meaning that Terrapinia's full surface or motion paths remain unknown. Of note is that the southern hemisphere of the planet is entirely shrouded in a misty cap of clouds, and none of the in-game locations are featured there except for Daydream Oasis and Nightmare Rift, which are artificial locations sustained by magic and technology. Considering that Funkiki island, a hot, tropical, actively volcanic locale, is located at or near Terrapinia's north pole, it may be possible that the lack of visible nightfall in-game, the sustained heat of Funkiki Island, and the sparsely inhabited southern hemisphere imply that Terrapinia's axis always rotates such that its north pole faces the sun.

As previously mentioned, magical and unnatural landscapes are commonplace in Terrapinia. Aside from the Dream States, which were brought into existence through the Portal network and Dream Machine invented by Dr. Tinker, there is also Paradox Green, which earns its name for its bizarre geographical makeup, as the magical Gnomon Tree links together four small precipices eternally set in one of the four seasons. Aside from these magic lands, most areas in Terrapinia follow Earthly design and logic, usually set in sunny, clear weather, and showcasing the Funkeys' vast, distinct architecture.

Locations

A wide number of Terrapinia's locales are able to be explored on foot in-game. While none of the continents have a name, the large landmass prominently featured on the image of Terrapinia depicts an industrialized landscape made into a visible white cityscape. At one of its mountain-surrounded shores is Funkeystown, which is proclaimed to be the "home of the Funkeys" and the "greatest city throughout all of Terrapinia." As these claims are from the town's own mayor, this may be biased or unreliable information. Funkeystown has hollowed out a piece of its mountain ranges to build the Royalton Racing Complex, which is a racetrack surrounded by grandstands. Angus has also constructed a large manor in the side of another of Terrapinia's gray mountains.

Not far from Funkeystown's domain is a region of significantly taller gray mountains, which hosts the Perilous Verge at the peak of its tallest mountain. The region is the home of the Oni, who have destroyed all paths to the mountaintop, and shrouded the region in magical clouds with a spell known as the Gauzian Blur, thus renaming this region to the Hidden Realm. The only known way to reach the kingdom is through air travel.

Funkeystown is on the lowest edge of the northern half of this massive continent, but the landmass is thinly connected to a southern region, in much the same way that North and South America are linked. Somewhere in this southern landmass is Paradox Green, which features four distinct landmasses connected by the Gnomon Tree at its center. With the tree in poor health, the four landmasses slowly begin to drift apart, implying that they may be founded on very active tectonic plates, and are likely not surrounded by very much exterior land.

Funkiki Island is positioned almost perfectly on the planet's north pole.

Magma Gorge is located on a continent to the west of the industrialized one. It would appear that most of the land in the area is as dark, rocky, and volcanic as Magma Gorge itself. Laputta Station is a space station docked into a small chunk of orbital rock, and it flies above the continent of Magma Gorge, though whether or not it follows Terrapinia's hypothetical orbit is unknown. The ocean between Magma Gorge's and Funkeystown's continent is where the undersea settlement of Kelpy Basin is located.

In the shrouded southern hemisphere, the artificial landmasses known as Daydream Oasis and Nightmare Rift are apparently physically anchored to the planet, likely having been physically forged through some mystical measure after Dr. Tinker made Portals capable of going there. Daydream Oasis is to the west of Nightmare Rift, but the two are nearby.

A number of locations have been alluded to in the Codex, without actually being real locations capable of being visited. One of the first mentioned locations is Mesofunkey Plains, a landscape that features lingering history pertaining to the Funkazoic Era. This area is named after, and potentially resembles, the real-life Mesopotamia. Because one of Tiki's quotes imply that the other Funkeys tribes do not know what Mesofunkey Plains is, it is likely not a very well-remembered location, and it is not known if any tribes actually live there.

The Raj are said to hail from the Nosretep Tam Jungle, and their Codex further alludes to 14 provinces that they operate their hair services in, including the Republic of Rajjanistan.

Various icy biomes have been spoken of in the Codex. The Bomble hail from the Wowsnatch Mountain Range, though their quotes also allude to the "Herastandin Mountains," making it unclear if these locations are the same, or are distinct snowy mountains that the Bomble hail from. One location, Frigid Murk, is referenced twice; once in Tank's description in reference to its "bottomless trenches," and again in Tadd's, where it is implied that somewhere in the Frigid Murk is a secret crystal cave. Because the Frigid Murk is implied to be some sort of glacier or arctic continent, it may be positioned on the south pole, opposite to Funkiki Island. The Flurry's description states that they come from the "shivery ice flow region," never implicating a proper name for this homeland. It is only said that the Flurry created the snowy Mt. Carousel on Funkiki Island by importing the finest snow from the highest peaks in Terrapinia (likely not counting the Hidden Realm, which does not snow). It is unknown if the aforementioned mountain ranges or the Frigid Murk are related to the Flurry's homeland, or even one another.

The Ptep originally hail from a land modeled after ancient Egypt; the tribe currently resides in a duplicate of these ruined lands made within Nightmare Rift. This location is where King Funkankhamun enacted his rulership.

Trivia

  • A terrapin is a small turtle found in marshes on the east coast of the United States. It is identified as having diamond-shaped markings on its shell. Naming the planet after a type of turtle may be a reference to "The World on the Turtle's Back," a popular piece of Native American folklore.
