In-Between

The In-Between is a dimension outside of Terrapinia introduced alongside Angus Funkwell, the only Funkey who can claim to have properly explored it. The In-Between is named for the fact that it is neither "here" nor "there," referring to the transmission of Funkeys from one Portal to another.

In-game

The In-Between is the realm that U.B. is sent to while spiraling to a new area during the loading screens between Portals. Portals send a Funkey into the In-Between, which can stretch or compress space-time infinitely, to appear at the other end of the Portal network. The Dream Machine allows this process to apply to Daydream Oasis and Nightmare Rift; both of these Portals have distinctly-colored In-Between loading screens.

In the cutscene The Funkey Trunk, Angus explains that he has not been to Terrapinia in a long time, referring to his days spent inside the In-Between. Pictures of the In-Between, depicted as a purple, abstract void full of giant chemical compound shapes, are shown in the cutscene. Angus has set up his lab in the In-Between, where he studies the creation of Funkey Familiars, creatures born from lost Funkey cells when they pass through it during the Portal process.

The player cannot explore the In-Between as a legitimate area. Instead, the Funkey Trunk given by Angus serves as a portal to the In-Between, where it can be used as a storage unit to hold on to the various items and currency related to Angus and his services. The Funkey Trunk can be opened and taken from at any time. Angus Manor also seems to be in some way connected to the In-Between, which may explain how it is taller on the inside than it appears on the outside.
