List of Minor Characters
This article lists every distinctly-named character mentioned in codex entries, flavor text, and other in-game scripts. This list also includes small groups like music bands and government branches that have at least one named character among its members. Many characters named in tribe descriptions are playful references to real figures.
Ali Gory
Ali Gory is a Webley who invented the World Wide Web, a literal web of information which is the Funkey equivalent to the internet (separate from the Funkeynet, a digital platform used by the Rom). He was known to be particularly hairy and scary, and was an enthusiast for web voting.
Ali Gory is a reference to Al Gore, the Vice President under Bill Clinton, explaining Ali Gory’s love of web voting. Al Gore once claimed to have invented the internet, much like how Ali Gory actually did weave the World Wide Web. Ali Gory is also a double entendre; “Ali” is a masculine first name and “Gory” refers to his especially scary appearance, and together, his name sounds like “allegory,” as he is an allegory for Al Gore.
AOXOMOXOA
AOXOMOXOA is a now-separated multi-genre band consisting of Jerry Pearl and his friends Lesh Dyer, Waggs Weir, and Pigpen Deuce. It is unknown where Jerry’s bandmates are today, and if the listed names from his codex entry are their genuine names or stage titles. Jerry was a singer and guitarist for the band, while the roles of the other members remain unknown. Their unique genre-blended “Funkey Fusion” style earned them a wide community, which called themselves “Funkheads.” AOXOMOXOA was disbanded after Jerry, tired from his tours, took what was meant to be a two-week long vacation to Funkiki Island, which ended up being permanent as the Great Disaster occurred during his stay, stranding him there and forcing him to start a new life among the native Funkeys. During the Jerry cutscene, he is seen alongside two Dyer, which may reference one of his lost bandmates, Lesh Dyer.
AOXOMOXOA is a reference to the band Grateful Dead; the Funkeys involved are named for the members of Grateful Dead, with Jerry Garcia to Jerry Pearl, Phil Lesh to Lesh Dyer, Bob Weir to Waggs Weir, and Ron "Pigpen" McKernan to Pigpen Deuce. Aoxomoxoa is a Grateful dead album.
Berger King
The Berger King is an unnamed character mentioned in the Berger’s codex entry. He is beloved, and preserved in plastic forevermore inside a museum, which some find creepy. The Berger having a king may be a pun on the popular fast food chain Burger King, while the idea of a preserved plastic cow being displayed in a museum may reference the popular act of creating large plastic cows to display in real-world cheese museums.
Billiam Gaytes
Billiam Gaytes is a Rom engineer (also described as a “nerd”) who attempted to establish a new upgrade for the Rom tribe that would enhance their ability to use the Funkeynet. His goal was to make the Rom “see” the net, presumably through some kind of AR technology. This upgrade causes literal memory leaks in Rom software.
Billiam Gaytes is a clear reference to Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft. His only listed quote, describing his Rom upgrade as "Like looking through the window at the beautiful Vista,” references Windows Vista, which is an OS run on Microsoft computers.
Brock Loosetoe
Brock Loosetoe is a Webley expeditionist captain who led the Webley along the World Wide Web to find Funkiki Island and set up a new home there. He used his famous Web Shooter to grab faraway items and bridge gaps.
He is named after Jacques Cousteau, a French naval officer who co-developed the Aqua Lung. In the cutscene A Sticky Situation, he is mistakenly named “Brock Cousto,” giving him a nearly identical family name to the person he is based on. Coincidentally, Radica employee Robert Brock is listed in the game’s credits as “Spider Funkey.”
Dyer (character)
Dyer is the name of a boy told of in the Dyer tribe’s folklore, for whom the tribe is presumably named. Known to be a prankster, he tricked a local wolf by betting on cards, only for the wolf to find that the trickster had cut the deck and used a full set of identical cards. Barely escaping alive, young Dyer vowed never to harm or trick anyone else, going so far as to prevent the use of soap on himself so as to protect the Kooties.
Foxgang Funkzart
Foxgang Funkzart is a musician beloved by the Holler. He is named after Wolfgang Mozart. Like his inspiration, he composed classical, symphonic melodies. Modern Holler compare his work to M.C. Funkey Floyd.
Funkeys Association for Resisting Tyranny
The Funkeys Association for Resisting Tyranny, or F.A.R.T., is a small group of various Funkey tribes led by Mayor Sayso in secret, acting as a covert military force and resistance squadron that combats the reign of Master Lox. Mayor Sayso depicts himself as a bumbling old man to hide his true nature as the mastermind behind the resistance force; despite this fact being a closely-guarded secret, it is publicly available information written in Mayor Sayso’s codex entry.
Funkeys Armed Recon Stealth Elites
The Funkeys Armed Recon Stealth Elites, or F.A.R.C.E., is a government agency that enlists Funkey soldiers for the purposes of scouting unexplored regions stealthily to ensure their safety for Webley explorers. Famously, the Snipe are the most well-trained and highest-ranking soldiers under this group. They are nicknamed the “Bush Brothers” because of their tendency to hide in bushes; most Funkeys these days equate the word “bush” with F.A.R.C.E. Funkeys are also known to say “May the F.A.R.C.E. be with you… because you certainly don’t want them against you!”
The use of the word “farce” (meaning a dramatic, exaggerated, or outright untrue narrative) and its relation to the word “bush,” combined with the group’s status as a military, completes a metanarrative criticism of former U.S. President George Bush, his relationship with the military, and conspiracies of his involvement in various scandals and tragedies during his presidency. The quote that Funkeys often say about the agency is a reference to “may the Force be with you,” a quote from the Star Wars film series.
Funkiki Chieftains
Previous, now deceased, Funkiki Chieftains were the predecessors to the Pineapple King. Historically, newly-appointed chieftains would be named after whichever object or creature they first fished from Funkiki’s waters. According to the Pineapple King’s codex entry, previous titles include “‘Tuna Kings’, ‘Squid Kings’, a few ‘Bass Kings’, and in one particularly messy incident, there was even a ‘Very Angry Shark King’” (the latter of whom had an extremely short reign, presumably because the angry shark ate him). The Pineapple King is named for the pineapple he caught on his royal canoe trip, though rumors have spread about whether or not this was a divine stroke of luck or a farce on the King’s behalf so that he would not be named for a “stinky fish.”
General Key-Oki
General Key-Oki is the general of F.A.R.C.E. He is known for his constant training regimens that keep the Snipe prepared, on edge, strong, and close like brothers.
His name is a reference to General Obi-Wan Kenobi, a character from the original Star Wars films.
Glub Queen and Parliament
The Glub’s parliament and queen are unnamed officials who are referred to in the Deuce’s codex entry. The Glub’s queen was unimpressed with the Glub who performed before her while dressed in gaudy clothing that the Deuce pranked them into wearing to the event. The idea of the Glub having a queen may be an extension of the fact that the Glub tribe lives in a castle, referencing how miniature castles are commonly used as decorations in fish bowls.
Great Mother Terrapin
The Great Mother Terrapin, or simply Mother Terrapin, is the idol of the Lotus tribe and personification of the planet Terrapinia. It is believed that the Great Mother Terrapin will protect anyone who protects her. Doc, the Natives, and the Tadd are also believers in Mother Terrapin.
Her name is a reference to the terrapin turtle for which Terrapinia is named, and she is a reference to the deity “Mother Earth” (known in her original Greek incarnation as Mother Gaia), the mythical goddess of nature that is the personification of planet Earth.
Guild of Master Technicians
The Guild of Master Technicians is a group of Funkey technicians led by Dr. Tinker. They are partly depicted in Welcome to Funkeystown, where they are simply called a guild of master technicians. In Xener's codex entry, however, they are correctly cited as a proper organization.
The Guild of Master Technicians consists of multiple tribes of Funkeys, including Fallout and Xener. the Xener initially pitched the idea to make Portals to the moon, to fulfill their thirst for space exploration. While the guild failed to create technology that could link between celestial bodies, the creation of the Portals instead allowed for instantaneous transmission across all civilized Funkey lands, allowing Terrapinia to prosper. During the Great Disaster, the guild's leader was lost to a horrible Portal accident, presumed to have died. It is unknown if the Guild of Master Technicians operates today.
Funkeystown's Funkey technicians, like the ones seen in Friendly Little Critters, are never stated to be part of the guild, but multiple of the same Funkeys from previously mentioned cutscenes reprise their Portal maintenance roles, implying that the guild may live on.
Kamenwati the Magician
Kamenwati the Magician was King Funkankhamun’s trusted advisor. Being secretly malicious and overambitious, he ordained to learn the Stitch’s closely-guarded secrets which could bring down his king. When he failed to make them speak, he instead successfully teleported the king to a distant land by whispering a curse in his ear during breakfast. Before he could seize the king’s throne and complete his coup, the Ptep sealed him in a tomb underneath it, where he is presumably mummified to this day.
King Funkankhamun
King Funkankhamun is the previous ruler of Terrapinia. While it is unknown what his kingdom was named or over whom he initially ruled, King Funk (as he is often abbreviated) is most famous for instating the Golden Age of Funkeys by uniting the Funkey tribes and mobilizing them against King Kahn, a tyrant king who aimed to control Terrapinia by force. King Funkankhamun was advised by Kamenwati the magician, and enlisted two tribes of Funkeys as additional advisors: the Ptep as his guards, and the Stitch as the keepers of his dangerous secrets. The Stitch kept secrets so powerful, it is rumored that the knowledge alone could bring down the king.
King Funk’s secrets were coveted by Kamenwati, though the Stitch refused to relent. Wanting to rule Terrapinia for himself, the king’s traitorous advisor whispered a curse in King Funk’s ear during breakfast, warping him to the farthest edges of Terrapinia to be lost forever. King Funkankhamun is still awaited for by the Ptep, who protected his kingdom from the coup by sealing Kamenwati under his throne; the Ptep loyally remain in his kingdom, which is now located inside or replicated by Nightmare Rift, awaiting his return. In boredom, the Ptep created the Pyramid Puzzler game, and also rumored that the giant red buttons deliver gifts to him, wherever he is.
Notably, King Funkankhamun’s silhouette can be observed in the cutscene The Enlightened Path. He is wearing a giant crown, and holds an identical staff to Mayor Sayso.
King Funkankhamun is named after King Tutankhamun, which extends to having a single-syllable nickname (“King Funk,” “King Tut”). The lands over which he ruled, and the Ptep tribe which served him, are based on ancient Egypt, which Tutankhamun ruled over. Famously, Tut was among the youngest and shortest-lived pharaohs of all, which may be referenced by King Funk’s sudden removal from power by his traitorous advisor.
King Kahn
King Kahn was a diabolical tyrant who led an army of loyal and violent Funkeys. He is likely to have instigated the Great Funkey Wars, Terrapinia’s largest global conflict, with the aim of controlling Terrapinia himself. Kahn’s powerful forces overwhelmed the Oni and led them into a life of hiding. Kahn and his army were nonetheless defeated at the hands of King Funkankhamun and the Funkeys who united under him, ushering in the Golden Age of Funkeys. Kahn’s status post-war is unknown; he is presumably deceased or imprisoned.
He may be named after the Khan dynasty, rulers of the Mongol Empire. Fittingly, King Kahn was conceived for the story of the vaguely Asian-themed Hidden Realm expansion.
King Krisrajson Raj
King Krisrajson Raj is the current ruler of the Nosretep Tam Jungle, and king of all Raj. He rose to power with an unwavering passion for hair gel. “Gel is your friend” is his slogan, and under his rule, Raj are forced to study major Raj-run hair gel brands.
His name may also be “Kirsrajson Raj.” It is spelled both ways in the Raj’s codex entry.
M.C. Funkey Floyd
M.C. Funkey Floyd is a renowned contemporary rap musician beloved by the Holler. His work is often compared to Foxgang Funkzart in Holler debate groups. “M.C.” is a popular acronym (standing for Master of Ceremonies) to put before a rapper’s stage name, while “Funkey Floyd” may be a pun on “funky flow.”
Naj Raj
Naj Raj is a former king of the Raj Hair-ocracy. Naj violated the grooming law by single-handedly attempting to bring back the Caesar cut, and was branded a hair-etic and exiled to ponder his hairpocrisy.
Rivet Rose
Rivet Rose is an Ace who aided the war effort in the Great Funkey Wars by conceiving technology used by King Funkankhamun to claim victory over King Kahn. It is likely that the Ace, potentially Rivet Rose in particular, engineered the Funkey mechas seen in The Enlightened Path and among the ruins near Snipe’s game room in Nightmare Rift.
Rivet Rose is named after Rosie the Riveter, a fictional woman used in World War II propaganda in America to galvanize the women at home to contribute to the war effort and prove themselves strong and capable. Furthermore, Rivet Rose is a pun, combining the common last name “Rose” with the first name “Rivet,” which as a noun can refer to a bolt of metal used to unite two pieces (alluding to the machine-like nature of the Ace, and their talent for engineering).
Ryder
The Ryder is a mysterious traveler spoken of in the Rom’s codex entry. He was once a poor salesman with a poorer haircut, but ended up conceiving the Metro, a tram network enjoyed by the Rom today.
Tenzing Webley
Tenzing Webley is a renowned Webley explorer who spent a year among the Bomble tribe after discovering them. He began their tradition of eating fish after offering an angry Bomble one, and by learning their language and becoming one with their culture, he had hoped to claim recognition for his marvelous discovery. Unfortunately, no one believed his tall tales until King Sidd visited the Bomble himself and brought them to the Hidden Realm during the events of the game.
He is likely named after Tenzing Norgay, who was, alongside Edmund Hillary, the first to scale Mt. Everest.
Miscellaneous
Legends say a miner discovered the button now seen in Laputta Station, using it as a tourist attraction. Reportedly, his laughing can still be heard as he watches Funkeys press it to find out what it does.
U.B. is friends with a common Sprocket and Lucky in the Wendy's CD cutscene for Car Conga. Lucky does not know where to find a good car, and phones in Sprocket, who says Con has the best deals on cars.
Three particularly villainous Gabby are blamed for spreading dark rumors that helped instigate the Great Funkey Wars. They were banished to the north, east, and west, respectively, after being held accountable. Their individual names are unknown.
The story of the young Dyer also features a folkloric anthropomorphic wolf. If this tale is at all true, it is unknown whether or not the wolf is some species of Funkey or a separate race altogether.
